ISRO's Bhuvan, the Geoportal for Indian Earth Now in 3D

Bhuvan (www.bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in) is poised with a vision to be a one-stop versatile Indian Earth Observation visualization system evincing the Indian imaging capabilities. Bhuvan has now got a new refreshing look and feel with loads of informative features and intuitive tools. The new 'Bhuvan 3D' provides many new interesting features such as Community Tool for collaborative mapping , Add Content for incorporating Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), Data Sharing for scholarly research available to other users/investigators, Developers API for rapid customization on Bhuvan, Live Navigation reference maps, a comprehensive user guide and many more easy to use responsive and intuitive tools.

This new and refurbished Bhuvan also comes with a new Bhuvan 2D web mapping service, which contains detailed imagery and embedded map data. Bhuvan 2D works on all platform and does not need any plug-in software. For the moment, the 2D version is under testing and will be continuously enhanced. Take it for a test drive and let us know what you think.

New Features:
The Imagery layer: This new feature enables the users to add an unlimited size of geo-referenced satellite imagery directly onto Bhuvan. These imagery layers can be imported from a personal server or a remote server.

The Elevation layer: This new feature enables the users to add elevation information onto Bhuvan. These elevation layers can be imported from a personal computer or a remote server.

Loading Web Feature Service (WFS) Data: This new feature enables the users to load OGC complied web feature service specifications to standardize requests for geographical features across the web. The Bhuvan WFS plug-in supports the polygons, polylines, and points WFS layer shape types.

Terrain Profile tool: This tool enables the user to view the terrain elevation profile along a path, and related information on this profile such as maximum and minimum elevation values and slopes.

Threat Dome tool: This tool enables the users to view the volume that is visible from a given point in the 3D View. Parameters, like the 'scan field' and 'elevation angle', and analyze different areas for visibility, can be set. This tool creates a 3D shape that resembles the top half of a sphere that accurately describes the areas viewable from the defined point.

Video on Terrain: This new feature enables the user to play a video file onto any selected area of the terrain. Here, a telemetric file can also be used to move the projected video, based on the readings recorded.

GIS Tools:
Attribute Query: This new feature enables the user to search for attributes on Bhuvan, according to the search criteria.
Buffer: This feature enables the user to enter a radius value and create a buffer on the terrain from the GIS tools
Community Tool:
This new feature of Bhuvan,  under 'Collaborate option',  allows the user to lead, follow, and share in real-time, interactive fly-through sessions, chat with other users, mark areas on the terrain, and toggle information layers for further analysis. This tool connects users on one collaborative network. Connecting over the internet/intranet, users can chat, annotate the terrain with text labels and free hand drawing, point using a virtual cursor and synchronize their flight. One user serves as the manager of the session, and the rest connect as clients.

Bhuvan 2D: 2D Bhuvan, a web mapping service application, provides a highly responsive, intuitive mapping interface with detailed imagery and embedded map data. It is based on the 'Open Layers Open Source Project' which offers powerful, user-friendly mapping technology to organize the satellite data and map data. Some of the functional capabilities of Bhuvan 2D are map navigation, map panning, its ability to add a point, polygon, line on the terrain, add drawings, measure area and distance on the terrain.

Existing Features:
Access, explore and visualise 2D and 3D image data along with rich thematic information on soil, wasteland, water resources etc.
Visualise multi-resolution, multi-sensor, multi-temporal image data
Superpose administrative boundaries of choice on images as required
Visualisation of AWS (Automatic Weather Stations) data/information in a graphic view and use tabular weather data of user choice
Fly to locations (Flies from the current location directly to the selected location)
Heads-Up Display (HUD) navigation controls (tilt slider, north indicator, opacity, compass ring, zoom slider)
Navigation using the 3D view Pop-up menu (fly-in, fly-out, jump-in, jump-out,view point)
3D Fly through (3D view to fly to locations, objects in the terrain, and navigate freely using the mouse or keyboard)
Drawing 2D Objects (text labels, polylines, polygons, rectangles, 2D arrows, circles, ellipse)
Drawing 3D Objects (placing of expressive 3D models, 3D polygons, boxes)
Snapshot creation (copies the 3D view to a floating window and allows to save to a external file)
Measurement tools (horizontal distance, vertical distance, measure area)
Shadow Analysis (it sets the sun position based on the given time creating shadows and effects the lighting on the terrain)
Urban Design Tools (to build roads, junctions and traffic lights in an urban setting)
Contour map (displays a colorized terrain map and contour lines)
Draw tools (creates simples markers, free hand lines, urban designs)

There would be many more value added functions and facilities which will be added into the package from time to time. Particular interest of ISRO/DOS would be to provide such functionalities to common man so that he/she adopts participatory approach with scientists to solve simple problems easily and interactively.
