3G Nexus 7 said to arrive in around six weeks

  • But it seems that will soon be remedied, as apparently a 3G model of the Nexus 7 is on its way. According to Paul O’Brien at MoDaCo, a 3G version of the Nexus 7 will launching in six weeks from now. The rest of the specifications are said to be identical to the current Nexus 7 tablet.
He did not have any information regarding the pricing and the launch date for the 3G model. It’s also unknown which markets this model will be released in, that is, if it will be limited to a single or multiple US carriers only. Hopefully, Google won’t do what they did with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus because that did not turn out well for anyone.

Nokia 808 PureView used to replace a professional cinema camera

  • He ended up with an impressive 120-second video showcasing what the Nokia 808 PureView is capable of when in the hands of a someone who knows what he’s doing.
Check the test footage Christopher made for an upcoming project of his. Make sure you watch it in full HD.
Here’s how the Swede got these amazing shots.
I did a “Flat picture” profile in the phone by dialing down contrast, saturation and sharpness and underexposed some of the scenes to protect highlights. I also used a mattebox, and 4’4 polarizing, and for some of the brighter scenes a 4’4 ND filter 0.9. I later upscaled the footage in premiere pro to later crop it for 1:2.35 aspect ratio. I color-corrected quite heavily, because I think I pushed the contrast a little bit to much so it all looked very flat.

Samsung Galaxy Camera has Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection

  • We knew the Samsung Galaxy Camera screen is guarded by the Gorilla Glass since its announcement. But the official press information didn’t say anything on the type of the Corning product used.
That’s why we decided to ask Samsung’s representatives at IFA about the protective layer over the Super Clear LCD screen on the Android-powered camera.
It turns out that the Galaxy Camera’s display is indeed protected by the second revision of Gorilla Glass. Sure it’s not going to affect the purchasing decisions of anyone, but it’s still good to know that Samsung didn’t cut any corners there.

List of phones and tablets in queue for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrade

  • All the companies selling Android devices have more or less announced their plans for the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. This update will bring exciting features and improvements including speed enhancements, improved search features, and a small voice recognition engine that fits in the device itself, without the need for installing external support. This means for voice recognition and support, the Android device won't require an active internet connection.
Here is what these companies plan to do:
List of phones and tablets in queue for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrade
    Samsung
The Korean giant is planning to upgrade its Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note to Android Jelly Bean. However, Samsung has not specified how much time it will take to bring these phones to the latest version.
Samsung Nexus S and Nexus Prime, which are part of Google's Nexus lineup, are already getting the update, but then Nexus Prime is not available in India.
Other phones in the Samsung line up like the Galaxy R, Galaxy S Plus and S Advance have the desired specification to support Android 4.1. However, Samsung has not announced any plans to upgrade them. These devices have not even been updated to Android 4.0.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is also likely to get Android 4.1, but there has been no announcement to that effect till now. Samsung has just announced that older Galaxy Tabs like the 750 will be getting Android 4.0 shortly.
    HTC
HTC has announced that it has started working on the Jelly Bean update. One X, One XL and One S are likely to be the first HTC devices to get it.
Some of the older phones like the HTC Desire line might not get updates as most of them are stuck at Android 2.3.
    Sony
Sony will update its Xperia 2012 lineup, which includes Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia Neo etc. It has also backtracked on a statement that the 2011 line-up is not getting the update and has now informed that it is still evaluating which of the phones from 2011 will get the upgrade.
Xperia Arc S is likely to make the cut.
    Motorola
Given that Motorola is now owned by Google, updates are expected to come faster. Motorola is already updating Xoom tablets to Android 4.1 and is soon expected to roll-out updates for its flagship Razr lineup and the Atrix 2.
    LG
LG has been a laggard in terms of updating its devices. According to some reports, LG Optimus 4X HD will get updated to Android 4.1 but only in the first months of 2013.
    Asus
Asus sells only two tablets in India. While it is confirmed that its Transformer Prime TF 201 will get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shortly, Transformer TF101 is also likely to get the update.
    Acer
Acer has also officially announced that it will update some of its Iconia tablets to Android 4.1. However, it has not specified which those tablets are. Given that in India only Iconia A500 and A501 are available and both have high end hardware, they are both likely to get the update.

Mouseless: Invisible Computer Mouse Invented By Pranav Mistry

  • Mouseless is an invisible computer mouse that provides the familiarity of interaction of a physical mouse without actually needing a real hardware mouse. Pranav Mistry, who earlier had made headlines for his invention Sixth Sense and received Popular Science 2009 Invention Award for it, has now invented yet another similar device and this time its invisible.

As the computer mouse has remained largely unchanged over the last decades, we have become increasingly proficient at operating the two-button mouse. Recently, various multitouch and gestural interaction technologies have been explored as means to implement alternative methods to interact with a computer.
Mouseless is an invisible computer mouse project done in in MIT Fluid Interfaces Group headed by Pranav Mistry, this invisible mouse provides the familiarity of interaction of a physical mouse without actually needing a real hardware mouse, hence removes the requirement of having a physical mouse altogether but still provides the intuitive interaction of a physical mouse that everyone is familiar with.
The Mouseless invention removes the requirement of having a physical mouse altogether but still provides the intuitive interaction of a physical mouse that we are familiar with. Mouseless consists of an Infrared (IR) laser beam (with line cap) and an Infrared camera. Both IR laser and IR camera are embedded in the computer. The laser beam module is modified with a line cap and placed such that it creates a plane of IR laser just above the surface the computer sits on. The user cups their hand, as if a physical mouse was present underneath, and the laser beam lights up the hand which is in contact with the surface. The IR camera detects those bright IR blobs using computer vision. The change in the position and arrangements of these blobs are interpreted as mouse cursor movement and mouse clicks. As the user moves their hand the cursor on screen moves accordingly. When the user taps their index finger, the size of the blob changes and the camera recognizes the intended mouse click.

Pranav Mistry said, "As we improve our computer vision algorithms, an extensive library of gestures could be implemented in addition to mouse movement and mouse clicks. Typical multi-touch gestures, such as zooming in and out, as well as novel gestures, such as balling one’s fist are all possible. In addition, the use of multiple laser beams would allow for recognition of a wider range of free hand motions, enabling novel gestures that the hardware mouse cannot support." This mouse costs just 20$ to build its prototype.
Here a Video overview for Mouseless invention:

Scottish Scientists Create 1000-Core Processor on a Single FPGA Chip

  • Scientist at the University of Glasgow made a 1,000 core FPGA (field programmable gate arrays) processor which is 20 times faster than current desktop processors. The team of scientist which led by Dr. Wim Vanderbauwhede, divided up the many millions of transistors into 1,000 different elements or mini-circuits, each of which are able to process their own instruction set. Currently no processors has more than 12 cores.

This prototype FPGA processor has apparently already shown 20x performance increase over conventional processors while using a fraction of the power.
In this development, the Scottish scientists have used a Xilinx field programmable gate array (FPGA). Specifically, Xilinx Virtex V4 was used in this design. By creating more than 1,000 mini-circuits within the FPGA chip, the researchers effectively turned the chip into a 1,000-core processor, each core working on its own instructions, writes Daily Mail. Also, the scientists claim that the 1000-core processor consumes far less power than modern processors.
The processor can process around 5 Gbytes of data per second, making it approximately 20 times faster than modern computers. Also, the scientists were able to obtain faster processing by giving each core a certain amount of dedicated memory. However, the report does not provide any details on the cores.

Dr. Wim Vanderbauwhede said, 'This is very early proof-of-concept work where we're trying to demonstrate a convenient way to program FPGAs so that their potential to provide very fast processing power could be used much more widely in future computing and electronics.” He added, “FPGAs are not used within standard computers because they are fairly difficult to program but their processing power is huge while their energy consumption is very small because they are so much quicker - so they are also a greener option.”

World's First Ice Touchscreen Made by Nokia

  • A team at Nokia in Finland has created the world's first icetouchscreen. Though it is not a practical device, of course, but the screen is being seen as a step towards an era in which the surfaces around us gain computing capabilities. The team used a tonne of 25-centimetre-thick river ice, and used a chainsaw to cut it into 50-centimetre-square slabs. They used these to make a 2-metre by 1.5-metre ice wall and then blasted the surface with a heat gun - more typically used for stripping paint - to create a smooth surface.
"This was a playful experiment, but one that we think showed interactive computing interfaces can now be built anywhere," says Jyri Huopaniemi at Nokia's research lab in Tampere, whose team built the touchscreen, dubbed Ubice, or ubiquitous ice. Finland has a tradition of building snow and ice sculptures during its long winter. It was these that inspired the device, says Antti Virolainen, a member of the Nokia team. "We decided to see if we could make an ice sculpture that was interactive."
The Nokia research team did basically was take blocks of ice, stack them up use heat guns to join them together and then using infrared, optics and some electronics to create the World’s first touchscreen made from ice.
"Playful experiments like this are important - people really liked it," says Huopaniemi. "New forms of interaction, sensing and content delivery for future mobile devices could come out of it."
Here a Video of World's First Ice Touchscreen Made by Nokia:
