Google Nexus 7 release date
For once, we don't have to wait forever to get our hands on some exciting new tech: the Nexus 7 launches in the US, UK and Australia this July. That's, like, days away!
Update: UK electronics retail chain Dixons posted a Nexus 7 release date of July 19 on its websites (including PC World and Currys), while Carphone Warehouse claims it will get stock of the tablet on July 27.
Update: A leaked internal document from US store Office Depot has suggested that the Nexus 7 will go on sale on July 12 - although this was when quashed by reports the tablet had been delayed.
Update: HMV's flagship store in Oxford Street, London has posted a board at the front of the shop which states the Nexus 7 will be available from July 16 - it turns out that the store might have got its facts wrong, as July 16 may just be a pre-order date.
An HMV spokesperson told TechRadar: "We expect to fulfil these (Nexus 7 pre-orders) orders on/from 23 July."
Update: According to several reports, some lucky folk in the UK received their Nexus 7 tablets today (July 13) from online retailer eBuyer. (viaGoogle+)
Google Nexus 7 price
The UK price for the Nexus 7 will be £159 ($199) for the 8GB model, and the 16GB one will cost £199 ($249). That gives you not just the tablet but £15 ($25) of Google Play credit to spend too, and it means that even the priciest model is half an iPad.,for India we can expect the Nexus 7 tablet to be available at Rs. 11,750/- approx for 8 GB and Rs. 14,500/- approx for the 16 GB version. Also if reports are to be believed then we should be able to get our hands on one after August, considering that Google Nexus Tablet may be available by July for the global markets.
Google will also offer a soft cover (but not a Surface-style keyboard one, at least not just now) and an extra charger should you need one.
Google Nexus 7 processor
Inside the Google Nexus 7 is a quad-core Tegra 3 processor packing a 12-core GPU and 1GB of on-board RAM. This, combined with some clever under-the-hood streamlining, means a buttery-smooth performance (pun intended, see below).
What does this mean in real terms? Google was at pains to stress the AWESOME GAMING POWER of a 12-core GPU. The built-in HDMI means you'll be able to connect it to your telly too
The Nexus 7 operating system is Android Jelly Bean
As you'd expect, Google's tablet runs Google's latest operating system:Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean. It also benefits from the very polished "Project Butter" user interface technology, which is much smoother than previous Androids or Amazon's forked version of the OS, and it's the first Android tablet to ship with Chrome as its default browser.
There's also a big camera improvement, a whole host of browser tweaks and some clever voice recognition upgrades... in short, a lot of worthwhile reasons to check out the first Android Jelly Bean device.
Google Nexus 7 dimensions and specs
The Nexus 7 is 198.5 x 120 x 10.45mm. It's considerably lighter than aniPad, and lighter even than a Kindle Fire: at just 340g, the Nexus 7 is the weight of a fairly slim book.
The Nexus 7 display is a seven-inch, 1280x800 IPS display, and you can choose between 8GB and 16GB versions.
There's integrated Wi-Fi but no 3G or 4G, a front-facing camera and a 4,325mAh battery that Google says is good for 8 hours of "active use".
There's also no microSD card slot, so you're limited massively if you're one of those that loves HD movies.
The Nexus 7 tablet includes a microphone, Bluetooth, NFC for Android Beam, an accelerometer, magnetometer, GPS and gyroscope, and the built-in Wi-Fi supports 802.11b, g and n.
All the companies selling Android devices have more or less announced their plans for the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. This update will bring exciting features and improvements including speed enhancements, improved search features, and a small voice recognition engine that fits in the device itself, without the need for installing external support. This means for voice recognition and support, the Android device won't require an active internet connection.
Here is what these companies plan to do:
Samsung
The Korean giant is planning to upgrade its Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note to Android Jelly Bean. However, Samsung has not specified how much time it will take to bring these phones to the latest version.
Samsung Nexus S and Nexus Prime, which are part of Google's Nexus lineup, are already getting the update, but then Nexus Prime is not available in India.
Other phones in the Samsung line up like the Galaxy R, Galaxy S Plus and S Advance have the desired specification to support Android 4.1. However, Samsung has not announced any plans to upgrade them. These devices have not even been updated to Android 4.0.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is also likely to get Android 4.1, but there has been no announcement to that effect till now. Samsung has just announced that older Galaxy Tabs like the 750 will be getting Android 4.0 shortly.
HTC
HTC has announced that it has started working on the Jelly Bean update. One X, One XL and One S are likely to be the first HTC devices to get it.
Some of the older phones like the HTC Desire line might not get updates as most of them are stuck at Android 2.3.
Sony
Sony will update its Xperia 2012 lineup, which includes Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia Neo etc. It has also backtracked on a statement that the 2011 line-up is not getting the update and has now informed that it is still evaluating which of the phones from 2011 will get the upgrade.
Xperia Arc S is likely to make the cut.
Motorola
Given that Motorola is now owned by Google, updates are expected to come faster. Motorola is already updating Xoom tablets to Android 4.1 and is soon expected to roll-out updates for its flagship Razr lineup and the Atrix 2.
LG
LG has been a laggard in terms of updating its devices. According to some reports, LG Optimus 4X HD will get updated to Android 4.1 but only in the first months of 2013.
Asus
Asus sells only two tablets in India. While it is confirmed that its Transformer Prime TF 201 will get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shortly, Transformer TF101 is also likely to get the update.
Acer
Acer has also officially announced that it will update some of its Iconia tablets to Android 4.1. However, it has not specified which those tablets are. Given that in India only Iconia A500 and A501 are available and both have high end hardware, they are both likely to get the update.
